Ingredients

Chicken
  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 0.25 tsp salt to taste
  • 0.25 tsp pepper to taste
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder to taste
  • 0.5 tsp smoked paprika to taste
Sour cream topping
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 0.5 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 packet (1 oz) ranch seasoning mix
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
Cheese and bacon
  • 1.5 cup shredded cheddar cheese divided
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese grated
  • 6 bacon strips, cooked crispy and crumbled
  • 0.5 tbsp fresh chives for garnish

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Preheat and season
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and grease a 9x13 baking dish. You should feel the pan is lightly coated so the chicken releases easily.
  2. Season the chicken breasts with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika to taste, then place them in the prepared dish. Arrange them in a single layer so they cook evenly.
Make the sour cream mixture
  1. Whisk together the sour cream, mayonnaise, ranch seasoning mix, and garlic powder until smooth. The mixture should look creamy and fully combined with no dry pockets of seasoning.
  2. Spread the sour cream mixture generously over each chicken breast. Cover the tops so the surface will bake into a thick, golden blanket.
Top and bake
  1. Top with shredded cheddar cheese (divided), Parmesan cheese, and crumbled bacon. Make sure the cheese covers the chicken so you get caramelized spots across the surface.
  2. Bake for 28-32 minutes at 375°F until the topping is golden and bubbly and the internal temperature reaches 165°F. Let it rest briefly, then garnish with fresh chives for a fresh finish.

Notes

For best browning, use a dish that holds the chicken snugly so the topping stays thick; avoid thinning the sour cream mixture. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container for up to 3-4 days—reheat in a 325°F oven until warmed through. Freezing is not recommended because the sour cream topping can become grainy after thawing. For a lighter option, swap mayonnaise for light mayonnaise and use reduced-fat cheddar if desired.
